Under cloudless skies and surrounded by a bonanza of flowering roses in the beautiful Marin (Northern California) garden of GAIA supporter Maria Pitcairn, GAIA’s April 30 “Village by Village” event raised record sums in support of efforts to end AIDS in rural Malawi. Spurred on by a $100,000 matching gift from Justine Miner and The Miner Foundation announced at the event, nearly 200 generous supporters contributed $344,450 to GAIA’s programs, exceeding our goal! We’re also pleased to report that the Event Committee’s Facebook Challenge helped grow our Facebook community by 50 new followers!
Party goers were inspired by the music of Caroline Sky (a competitor on the current season of NBC’s The Voice), and by the heartfelt vote-of-confidence messages of Dr. Address Malata (“Your gifts don’t just help individuals, they transform Malawi”), and GAIA Global Citizen honorees Bob McCaskill (“I’ve never saved anyone’s life, but by supporting GAIA I can now say I have.”) and Kelly Lawson (representing The Miner Foundation and announcing the amazing matching gift!) who underscored the difference that GAIA is making on the ground in Malawi.
We have informed the Malawi team of the event’s success and the expanded programming that these funds will enable, and they are thrilled. With the funds raised, GAIA will be able to contribute significantly to moving the dial forward on achieving the UNAIDS 90-90-90 HIV treatment targets in the rural areas where we work. A Malawian thank you –ZIKOMO KWAMBIRI! – to all who contributed to the day’s success.
