GAIA Programs—
Women's Empowerment and Microloans
HIV disproportionately affects women in Africa. The highest
incidence of HIV is among girls and young women
in the 15-24 age range. In some areas their HIV infection
rate is several times that of boys and men in the same
age group.
Lack of education and economic opportunity
put women at risk for HIV because they do not have the
power to negotiate sexual safeguards in their marriage or
are forced to resort to transactional sex to survive.

GAIA
responds by working to empower women, supporting
projects and programs that give women educational and
economic opportunities such as secondary schooling and nursing scholarships as well as microloans to establish small businesses.
